ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

If you have a significant nasal irregularity—such as a large hump on the bridge of the nose, a crooked nose, or poor tip projection—if you suffer from breathing difficulties, or if you simply dislike some aspect about the appearance of your nose, you may be a candidate for rhinoplasty.

During your initial consultation, our surgeons will examine your facial structure and skin to determine whether you’d make a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Each person’s nose structure and goals are unique, so your surgeon will assess your skin type and cartilage, while also discussing your medical history and current state of health.

Ideal candidates for this procedure are adults whose facial growth is complete and who are fully physically developed. Nose surgery patients should be both physically healthy and psychologically prepared for a rhinoplasty procedure.

Facelift Necklift Before And After

*Individual patient results may vary.

Patients who maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations tend to find more satisfaction in their results.

Patients who have serious health problems that might put them at risk if they go under anesthesia—such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or heart disease—may not be suitable rhinoplasty candidates. Patients who have very thick or oily skin also sometimes aren’t considered good rhinoplasty candidates. For these patients, the Cosmetic Surgery Institute team can develop an alternative strategy that may make use of nonsurgical treatments to create more balanced facial proportions.

PREPARING FOR A RHINOPLASTY

Your surgeon will talk to you about your goals and expectations for rhinoplasty, as well as discuss any allergies you have during your consultation. A physical examination and lab test might also be required. In the weeks leading up to the rhinoplasty procedure, your surgeon might ask you to make some lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, as nicotine use can delay post-surgical healing by preventing the skin from getting the nutrients it needs.

You may be asked to refrain from taking blood thinners such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain dietary supplements, if possible, because they increase the risk of bleeding and may interact with other medications involved in the rhinoplasty surgery. You might also be asked to avoid prolonged sun exposure to prevent sunburn.

You should make arrangements with a friend or loved one to drive you to and from surgery and stay over with you to help with small, day-to-day tasks after the procedure, as you will be feeling drowsy, weak, and disoriented at first due to the anesthesia. Aim to get your home organized before your recovery and complete any necessary errands ahead of time, ensuring that you have a peaceful place to rest as you heal.

OUR APPROACH TO RHINOPLASTY

Our surgeons understand that the interplay between your features is what creates your unique appearance. At our practice near Palm Springs, we tailor each rhinoplasty to the patient after carefully considering the entire composition of the face.

Your other facial features often determine the need for and extent of rhinoplasty. For example, your chin and cheekbones form a distinct ratio with the height, width, and projection of your nose. Even small changes in the bridge or tip can match your nose to these other features so none stands out too prominently. Rhinoplasty can also correct the angle between your nose and your forehead or your upper lip.

YOUR NOSE SURGERY CHOICES

WHAT CAN RHINOPLASTY DO TO ENHANCE THE APPEARANCE OF MY NOSE?

Patients have different preferences for what type of nose shape they wish to have, and these preferences often vary depending on the patient’s ethnicity and gender. For example, male rhinoplasty patients typically prefer a straighter, wider nose that projects a masculine appearance, while female patients often prefer a smaller, slightly more curved nose shape.

Rhinoplasty can narrow or straighten the bridge of your nose, get rid of a hump, or reduce nostril size. It can also change your nose’s outward projection or reshape an overly bulbous, narrow, wide, or boxy tip. It can even decrease the overall size of your nose.

CAN RHINOPLASTY HELP ME TO BREATHE BETTER?

This surgery usually involves straightening the septum to clear the nasal passages, which can restore breathing or stop snoring. In many cases, trauma such as a broken nose will cause scar tissue buildup inside the nasal passages. Surgery can clear the airway of this scar tissue.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROCEDURE

Depending on the extent of your rhinoplasty, you may receive general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Your surgeon will perform your procedure through small incisions made either inside your nostrils or across the columella (the external tissue between your nostrils). Your procedure may include the grafting of cartilage from your septum or ear to enhance the appearance of your nose.

YOUR RECOVERY FROM RHINOPLASTY

After the surgery, patients will have a splint and other dressings placed inside of the nose, and the outside will be bandaged. This helps to support the new shape of the nose as it heals. Within about a week, your surgeon will remove these supports.

It’s normal for the nose to feel slightly stuffy or congested after surgery. Patients will also likely notice some swelling, bruising, and bleeding that gradually resolve. A cold compress or ice pack will bring the swelling down, and it’s important to keep your head elevated.

It usually takes around a year for the nose shape to become fully refined after a rhinoplasty, although you will see some changes within a few weeks. Your surgeon will give you instructions on what to avoid in order to promote healing. You may be asked to refrain for several weeks from intense exercise that raises your blood pressure and heart rate, avoid heavy lifting, and do all you can to not sneeze, blow your nose, or place too much pressure on the nose.

ENHANCING YOUR LOOK

Your surgeon may recommend other procedures such as eyelid surgery to enhance the results of your rhinoplasty and create a more balanced appearance. Non-surgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or injectable fillers may also maximize your results by contouring the face and temporarily altering the way muscles interplay with the skin, depending on the treatment.
