Breast augmentation at Palm Desert’s Cosmetic Surgery Institute—also known as augmentation mammoplasty (or a “boob job” for Los Angeles-area patients)—is a popular procedure that involves the use of breast implants to increase breast size and enhance the appearance of the breasts. Although beauty standards vary across different cultures and societies, female breasts symbolize beauty and vitality for most of the world. Breasts come in many shapes and sizes, but some women may feel that they have small breasts, meaning that they are disproportionately small for their frame. Furthermore, no breasts are naturally perfectly symmetrical.

Genetics are believed to play the biggest role in determining the size, feel, and shape of the breasts. Other factors that may have an impact on breast size include weight, age, hormones, and pregnancy. Patients who consider implants are often self-conscious about the size and shape of their breasts. If you feel that your breasts are too small or asymmetrical due to any of these elements, breast augmentation with implants can be an excellent way of improving your appearance. Patients from Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, and other surrounding cities can benefit from this truly transformative cosmetic surgery procedure with Dr. Mo Zakhireh at the Cosmetic Surgery Institute.

If you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you’re far from alone. In 2024 and projected beyond, breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery in the United States.

For patients who want larger, shapelier, or more symmetrical breasts, breast augmentation may be the ideal option. Breast augmentation typically involves the insertion of implants, chosen specifically to suit each unique patient. During breast augmentation, the breast implants are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles. The procedure is highly customizable: Patients have the option of choosing the implant shape, size, material, projection, incision placement, and other aspects of breast augmentation, all with guidance from Dr. Mo.

“Why do people get breast implants?” is one of the most searched for questions when it comes to breast augmentation. There are various reasons why patients might choose to have breast augmentation. For many people, this form of cosmetic surgery can be a way of helping them feel more confident. They may choose to undergo the procedure to increase the fullness or projection of the breasts, improve natural breast asymmetry, or restore volume to the breasts after pregnancy or weight loss.

Breast augmentation can be a highly rewarding procedure and patient satisfaction is high, but it’s important that patients do their research to help them decide whether it’s the most suitable choice for them.

Remember that breast augmentation is a deeply personal procedure and that it should be done only for yourself rather than to please someone else. Our Cosmetic Surgery Institute team will be there to guide you through each step and explain everything that’s involved in breast augmentation surgery during your consultation so that you can find out whether it’s the best choice for you.

The first thing you might be asking yourself is: “Am I a good candidate for breast implants?” Before any type of plastic surgery, including breast augmentation, it’s important that you find out what type of plastic surgery you need, what type of results you can expect, and what you’ll need to do before the surgery to stay healthy and safe. This is why having a consultation is a prerequisite for breast augmentation. For some patients, another type of breast surgery—or even another form of plastic surgery—will be more effective than breast augmentation. The best candidates for breast augmentation will usually be ones who maintain realistic expectations.

Generally, it’s best that patients be in a good state of physical health without any active infections or other serious illnesses. If you do have medical issues that might increase the risk of complications from breast augmentation, be sure to talk to the surgeon about them. Women who have sagging, flattened, or asymmetrical breasts or want to enhance their cleavage or the volume of their breasts will usually be ideal candidates for breast augmentation.

Our surgeon recommends that patients wait until their breasts are fully developed before having any type of breast surgery. Being pregnant or breastfeeding, having untreated breast cancer, receiving an abnormal mammogram, or having a severe illness or infection will preclude you from having a breast augmentation—at least for a while.

Ultimately, these are just some general guidelines to help you decide whether you’d be a good candidate, but the final decision on whether or not you should have breast augmentation will be between you and your surgeon.

The next aspect you’ll need to know more about is how to get ready for breast augmentation. When you’re preparing for a breast augmentation operation, it’s likely that you’ll be advised to get a blood test, take certain medications, or adjust how you’re taking your medications, quit smoking, and avoid taking medications that can increase bleeding, like aspirin.

It’s common to feel weak, tired, and disoriented during recovery from breast augmentation. Accomplishing everyday tasks will be difficult in the first few days especially, so we recommend preparing in advance.

Preparation for this type of surgery will involve organizing your home so that you have a quiet area to rest and recuperate, doing any household chores that can’t wait, setting aside some pre-cooked meals, shopping for any clothes you may need after your procedure, lining up someone to assist you with taking care of small children or pets if necessary, and asking someone to drive you to the breast augmentation surgery and pick you up, as well as stay with you overnight.

One of the first things patients will usually ask us is, “What happens during breast augmentation?” Most breast augmentation procedures are performed with the patient under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Mo Zakhireh will make an incision in the breast crease and then place the implant beneath the muscle. A long-acting pain medication is applied to the pectoralis muscle during surgery, which allows the muscle to heal in a more relaxed manner and provides a softer breast augmentation result.

Breast augmentation at Palm Desert’s Cosmetic Surgery Institute involves the insertion of implants via the most appropriate incision for the procedure and patient. A transaxillary incision is made under the arm, a peri-areolar incision is made in the border of the areola around the nipple, an inframammary incision is made in the crease beneath the breast, and a transumbilical incision is made in the belly button. Each placement offers unique benefits.

Some patients worry that they will regret choosing implants that are too large or too small. Picking the “right” implant size is one of the most critical decisions involved in breast augmentation.

At Cosmetic Surgery Institute, our philosophy is to ensure that the body is well balanced. When helping you choose the right implant size, we take the time to educate you about your anatomy and physique and make suggestions regarding how to aesthetically balance your body and accentuate your shape. We offer bras with special sizing cups for a more accurate representation of your results.

During your breast augmentation consultation, implant sizers are placed inside the bra to show the different levels of breast enhancement or breast enlargement that can be achieved with surgical breast augmentation. We encourage you to bring several outfits to try on during the sizing process. Additionally, friends or loved ones are also welcome during this time to provide multiple perspectives.

Cosmetic Surgery Institute offers the latest generation of leak-resistant silicone implants. Also known as “gummy bear” implants for their cohesive texture, these breast implants provide a soft feel and natural look and have a strong history of safety. They retain their shape more effectively than traditional types of fillings. Since they are made up of a thick gel, these gummy bear implants stay intact even if their shells are ruptured. Saline implants are not usually recommended for breast augmentation surgery because they are more prone to complications such as “rippling” later on. You will be able to discuss what breast implants cost and other details during your breast augmentation consultation.

Typically, for the most natural result, Dr. Mo suggests placing the breast implants beneath the pectoralis muscle for breast augmentation. This way, the muscle acts as a protective cover over the implant while also massaging the implant to keep it soft—potentially preventing capsular contracture, which is hardening of the scar tissue. This placement, which is called a submuscular placement, is thought to make implants look and feel more believable. Mammography screenings in women with implants placed beneath the muscle are easier to review as well.

For breast augmentation surgery, Palm Desert’s Dr. Mo prefers to insert the breast implants through the shortest, most direct route to optimize outcomes. Typically, this is through the breast crease, technically known as the inframammary fold. Unlike incisions made through the nipple or areola, an incision made in the inframammary fold avoids damage to major blood vessels and nerves, preserves sensation and functionality of the nipple, and uses a natural body crease to hide the incision.

The most common side effects to expect after breast augmentation at Palm Desert’s Cosmetic Surgery Institute are minor swelling, bruising, tenderness, and soreness that can last anywhere from a few days to weeks. Post-operative instructions will be provided by our team, and we will guide you on how to best care for your incisions. Painkillers or antibiotics may also be prescribed while you’re healing.

Exactly how long is breast augmentation recovery, you might ask? On average, a full recovery period will be about six weeks, but patients will gradually feel better throughout that time. Also, remember that each patient’s body is different, so the timeline for recovery varies. The time it takes to recover will depend on the individual’s health, age, what type of anesthesia they are given, and other factors.

Curious about what to avoid after breast augmentation? Because of the gentle surgical techniques used at Cosmetic Surgery Institute, you should be able to resume your normal daily activities about a week after your breast surgery in the Los Angeles area. If you have a sedentary job, you’re likely to be able to return to work by this time. More strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks.

The most uncomfortable and difficult time for patients is generally the first three to five days after their procedure. Once the first seven days have passed, patients can gradually return to their normal routine and incorporate more light exercises. Gentle walks are advisable because they will help to improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and eat well during recovery. Avoid intense or strenuous exercise—including cardio and heavy lifting—for at least the first two weeks. Patients will have to wear a recovery bra as a support garment while they recover to make them more comfortable and accelerate healing.

The surgeon and staff at Cosmetic Surgery Institute believe the best breast augmentation procedures are comfortable, safe, and rewarding from start to finish. To do this, we make ourselves available to you throughout the entire process to answer any questions or concerns you may have, from expected augmentation results to breast enhancement cost. We also offer a progressive approach to pain management, providing our patients with pain medication and anti-inflammatories the day before surgery to minimize discomfort.

Dr. Mo Zakhireh uses very gentle surgical techniques during tissue dissection to reduce muscle spasms, minimize blood loss, and facilitate more rapid healing. Only 4 percent of our patients require post-operative narcotic pain medication, and many of our patients go out to dinner the night of their breast augmentation procedure. We understand how important it is to for our breast augmentation patients to get back to daily life quickly and comfortably.

Another method of increasing the size of the bust or enhancing the appearance of the breasts is with fat transfer breast augmentation. The fat transfer procedure does not require the use of saline or silicone implants. Instead, fat is moved from another part of the body such as the thighs or belly to increase the volume of the breasts. This breast fat injection technique can also be used to further enhance and refine the results of breast augmentation with implants by adding more fullness to the upper pole area, creating a more ideal breast shape, or reducing the appearance of rippling.

Breast augmentation isn’t the only choice available for patients who want to improve the appearance of the breasts. We offer several types of breast surgery in addition to breast augmentation. These include breast lift surgery, which restores a perkier, shapelier breast shape and addresses sagging, along with breast reduction for women who want smaller breasts. Women who are experiencing back pain or other symptoms caused by having very large breasts may benefit from a reduction procedure.

Should you get a breast lift with implants? Some patients see breast lift before-and-afters and choose to add a lift to their breast augmentation as a way of getting the most out of the surgery. The combined lift and breast augmentation procedure can be a way of restoring overall younger-looking breasts. The surgery will increase your cup size while also giving the breasts a more pleasing shape and elevated position.

There are also a wide range of procedures available to enhance your silhouette aside from breast augmentation, including tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, and Mommy Makeover surgery. Tummy tuck surgery and liposuction can complement breast augmentation and provide additional enhancement of the body shape, if that’s what a patient wants. A Mommy Makeover combines several different surgeries to restore the patient’s body to its pre-baby state, but will usually include a tummy tuck and breast surgery since the abdomen and breasts are the areas that are most affected by pregnancy.

Non-surgical procedures such as laser skin resurfacing are an option to consider after breast augmentation to improve the appearance of the skin. Laser-based treatments can minimize scars from plastic surgery while providing a more even skin tone and texture.
