OUR APPROACH FOR PALM DESERT, INDIO, AND LOS ANGELES-AREA PATIENTS

Hernias are a fairly common concern, affecting tens of thousands of people in the United States each year. Although the cause of a hernia is sometimes clear, many people develop them for no discernible reason. At Cosmetic Surgery Institute, our surgeons offer a method of hernia repair for Palm Desert-area men and women that maximizes comfort and long-lasting results. Dr. Mo Zakhireh views hernia repair as a simple operation that can greatly enhance the lives of patients for years.

OUR APPROACH TO HERNIA REPAIR SURGERY

At Cosmetic Surgery Institute, patients may undergo hernia repair surgery on its own or in conjunction with abdominoplasty. Note that hernia repair does not have any effect on the recovery time or outcome of the body contouring procedure more commonly known as a tummy tuck.

There are two common techniques for repairing a hernia: open and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Zakhireh performs the open technique exclusively because it allows him to more effectively tighten weak, loose tissues and increases the chances of long-term success. He also prefers to repair and reinforce the hernia using a patient’s own tissue rather than surgical mesh, which has been linked to long-term discomfort and other complications.

YOUR CHOICES FOR HERNIA REPAIR SURGERY

IS SURGICAL HERNIA REPAIR NECESSARY?

Yes. Although many people live with their hernias for years, the condition is progressive. Over time, hernias gradually become larger and may cause serious complications. Surgical intervention is best performed while the hernia is still relatively small. Although hernias are not typically considered medical emergencies, postponing surgery for too long may make the procedure more complicated and less effective.

WHAT WILL MY SCAR LOOK LIKE?

Open hernia repair surgery requires a 3- to 4-inch incision in the pubic area, unless the procedure is done during a tummy tuck, in which case that incision may be used. The resulting scar will fade significantly over time and with proper postoperative care.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF HERNIA REPAIR SURGERY?

Hernia repair surgery is an extremely safe, common surgery that’s performed thousands of times annually. The main risks associated with the procedure are similar to those of other surgeries and can include infection, reaction to anesthesia, and nerve damage. These risks are minimized when the surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon.

YOUR HERNIA REPAIR PROCEDURE

At our Palm Desert clinic, Dr. Zakhireh performs hernia repair with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgery usually lasts between 35 and 40 minutes. When performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck, it will take longer.

Once you are fully anesthetized, the incision is made. Your surgeon then locates the area where abdominal tissue or an organ has bulged through the muscle wall. He then uses that muscle to essentially patch the hole, reconstructing a firm wall using your own tissue. Once the repair has been completed, the surgeon manually examines the area to ensure the repair is tight and stable, ensuring more long-term success. The incision is then sutured.

Hernia repair, with or without a tummy tuck, is an outpatient procedure. You should stay off your feet for about three weeks after. You are given a compression garment that must be worn for up to six weeks following surgery. This garment supports the repaired hernia and allows it to heal strongly. Light activity may be resumed after three weeks, but more strenuous activity, including working out, should be postponed for longer.
